Develop Self: CE2 - Lead Team Decision Making

For the second unit of this module, we learn how to lead a team in decision making.

Before leading a team, leaders should plan and organise, to ensure that they have their objectives and priorities straight. Collation of data and necessary information need to be obtained first to assist in the decision-making process. This is actually a no-brainer and basic. However, people keep forgetting or ignoring their basics and the necessary steps in order to achieve their objectives, thinking that the process is banal in nature and they could easily execute the project without any planning.

Allow me to share how I make decision recently at work.

There is a need to change the company's website provider and email marketing system. The company have been engaging the current provider's services for years, and they may be hesitant in engaging a different provider. Apart from that, hits to the website is low, and we need Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing campaign to generate more leads.

So I list down the issues that we have with the current website and why we need to engage a new provider. (Note: I have to say I was being biased, because the list I created only focus on the negativity of the current website and pros of getting a new designer)

Then I created a mock-design on how the new site will look like, because it will help the GM and managers visualise how it will look like. At the same time, I collected data on the number of visits to the website, including the length of visits and pageviews.

That's it!

Nah, just kidding. One must know that making decision or proposal is no walk in the park. Other than the above, I need to present my ideas for the future contents of the website & its frequency, estimate the time of completion, costings, campaigns for relaunch of the website, and many more!

So you must do your research thoroughly and come up with ideas that will either blow their minds, or simply make the existing process at work easier.

This is just the cream of the crop, and this unit covers more than what I've written here. But if you can at least do the above, then it's all fine and dandy.

At first, it may seem like a tough job, and you don't think that you are up for it. But hey, you never know until you try, right?

Trust me, if you think and work like a leader, you will do just great.
